The popularity of futuristic gadgets in the beauty and health field has skyrocketed in recent months. Once a convenient option for facial appointments, they are now widely available not only as LED masks and microcurrent skin care wands, but also as red light caps for hair growth, panels for the neck, and tools to target lips and eyes. Relatively new to the wellbeing space are PEMF mats.
PEMF mats use pulsed electromagnetic fields to go beyond the skin to feel good from the inside out. Supermodel Cindy Crawford is also a fan, showcasing her Bemar Matte in a social media post detailing her fitness and movement-heavy morning routine. But how do PEMF mats work and do they really make a noticeable difference?
What is PEMF mat?
PEMF technology, short for “Pulsed Electromagnetic Field,” emits low-frequency electromagnetic fields into your cells to improve circulation, manage pain, and reset your nervous system so you feel calmer and more grounded.
The device resembles a yoga mat (half-length sizes are also available) and often combines PEMF technology with warm infrared and crystals to add a sensory touch. These high-tech mats are equipped with a controller that allows you to set the desired frequency.
How does PEMF mat work?
It revolves around the idea of linking physics and physiology. “This technology emits low electromagnetic field pulses that send magnetic energy into the body to work with the body’s natural magnetic field, creating a grounding experience to improve health,” says Shabana Daya, a UK-based integrative aesthetic physician and general practitioner with a special interest in hormonal health and skin. Daya is also a member of the scientific advisory board of Bon Charge, a wellness technology company that produces products such as PEMF mats and LED masks.
Nima Mahmoodi, co-founder of wellness clinic Remedi London and founder of Remedi Sanctum, adds: “As our cells function through electrochemical signaling, these pulses can influence ion channels in the cell membrane, which in turn supports improved cellular energy production (ATP), circulation and tissue repair.” She says most PEMF mats operate within the low frequency range, often from 1 Hz to 50 Hz.
“Lower intensity settings tend to be used for relaxation, stress relief, and sleep support, while medium levels support circulation and muscle recovery. Higher settings are typically used to target deep tissue recovery, joint discomfort, or inflammatory responses,” says Dorsa Jalaei, preventive health consultant at Reborne Longevity, where mats such as CurrentBody’s Infrared PEMF Mat are used to accompany treatments.
What are the benefits of PEMF mats?
Mahmoudi said PEMF is widely used in the fields of sports medicine, rehabilitation and healthy longevity due to its ability to increase recovery, improve sleep quality and regulate the nervous system.
“There is also a growing body of research exploring PEMF therapy and inflammation,” Jalaei added. “Pulsed electromagnetic fields appear to influence cell signaling pathways involved in the inflammatory process and may help modulate the inflammatory response and support tissue repair. When combined with gentle infrared heat, which increases blood flow and oxygen supply, it may support recovery and reduce muscle pain and stiffness.”
For safety reasons, home mats, like all wellness and skin care products, are typically less effective than those used in clinical settings. “In-clinic mats are precisely calibrated and tend to emit more powerful electromagnetic pulses, which can reach deeper into the tissues. Therefore, in-clinic treatments are often shorter and are performed under expert supervision,” Mahmoudi explains.
However, household devices are designed to be easily integrated into daily life. You can lie on it for a long time and consistency is important to get results.
”[At home]Incorporating a PEMF mat as part of your recovery ritual can provide a recovery experience with peace of mind and post-workout comfort, and some people enjoy evening PEMF sessions to support relaxation and natural rest. ” added Daya. PEMF mat integrated with infrared light can relieve muscle pain with gentle heat.
PEMF mats do not cure illness, but they can help restore balance if your nervous system is in overdrive due to daily stress, frequent travel, or a demanding schedule. As with all things health-related, please be sure to consult your health care provider if you have specific concerns.
How often should I use my PEMF mat?
There are no prescriptive rules and usage will vary from mat to mat, but in general, Daya is recommended to be used at least three times a week.
“Depending on the strength of the device and user experience, 10-30 minute sessions are best for targeted support, while 40-60 minutes for full-body sessions are effective,” she says. “Beginners often start with shorter sessions of 10 to 15 minutes to help get used to the routine, and gradually increase sessions to 20 to 30 minutes as part of a consistent wellness routine.”
If you’re looking for a way to enhance your downtime routine, PEMF mats are the way to go.
