It was sunset in Austin, Texas, when Sarah Millman noticed something. The costume designer was looking at photos from the SXSW Film Festival, where her film was screened. forbidden fruitIt debuted earlier this month. “We had cosplayers come in,” Millman says. The young woman was emulating the signature style of actress Victoria Pedretti in the creepy satire about a shopping mall witch: white fringed cowboy boots, baby pink bloomers, a criminally tiny striped cardigan, and a pink Stanley Cup with a metallic pink sticker. “She copied [the look from] “But she started working on the movie very quickly, even before it was released,” Millman said.
A similar surprise happened in Manhattan last weekend. That meant that while Millman knew everything about those films, he had to remain conscious of going beyond them and keeping the film’s major stars informed about their characters. “It was a little scary,” Millman said. “They’re very stylish young women, and you might have the idea that working in Canada means you don’t have access to the internet or anything like that, but let me tell you this, none of them came in with that kind of energy. They were very open.”

Millman writes that when he started talking to Emma Chamberlain, who made her film debut as a dropout from a clique named Pickle, “she actually sent me a little lookbook, which included ballet flats that looked like someone had been wearing them at the mall for exactly three and a half years.” Chamberlain asked that all the cotton minidresses she wore in the film be hemmed. So It’s a short film that references 60’s horror heroines like Shelley Duvall and Mia Farrow. Reinhart created a Pinterest board that essentially “embodies” Apple’s character, featuring things like Rebecca Mojica’s vampire choker and subversive graphic T-shirts. And Pedretti “just showed up on set one day and was like, ‘I brought this scrunchie,’ and it was perfect,” Millman says. “Victoria has such a brilliant mind, that was our nod. heathers”
No shopping mall movie would be complete without a ton of denim. But it gets even more complicated on a horror set, complete with buckets of fake blood, constant casts of smoke and wax magic, and nail polish sharp enough to puncture fabric. American Eagle is a popular teen mall brand. forbidden fruit With enough denim, you can add a style stunt double to any outfit. These included Thun’s tiny pleated skort, Shipp’s floaty bohemian blouse, Reinhart’s black denim caprice (with a witchy corset top, of course), and Pedretti’s butt-hugging bootcut flare. In one memorable scene, Tan chases Chamberlain through an American Eagle store after finding Susan Alexandra’s charm bracelet on the floor.

That scene was more ridiculous than scary, Millman says. ‘Forbidden Fruit’ It was impossible to ignore the horror elements during production. “It was really creepy to shoot this movie all night in an abandoned shopping mall,” she said. “I found myself, running “This is too creepy,” I thought, so I went back to my wardrobe. Then one of the girls said it was a blood moon. It was that night that they actually shot the first scene where they cast the spell. ”
Millman worried that they had activated a real hex when candle wax from the coven’s on-screen ritual dripped directly onto Reinhardt’s Rodarte dress. “We thought, ‘Oh, we’ve gone too far. We’ve cursed ourselves!'” The studio’s budget was able to buy another Rodarte dress, marking the first and perhaps only time that movie magic surpassed real life magic and saved the day.
